CATCH BAND ON 10 FOR $10 TOUR!

“When I was thirteen or fourteen we would play shows up and down the east coast, we would skip school because we were so tired from playing in clubs all night.” Justice Tripp, vocalist of the Baltimore based hardcore band Trapped Under Ice is a lifer. To phrase it perfectly in their east coast hardcore vernacular there ain’t no new jacks in this band, comprised of hardcore fanatics who have been contributing to that lifestyle since their teens. While much of the scene is either drawing influence from technical death metal or playing a youth crew revival style, TUI channel their love of urban hardcore reality units like Crown Of Thorns, Madball, Stigmata and District 9 but with creative musical shifts that keep the listener on their toes. Justice comments “A lot of people wouldn’t pick up on it but we are also significantly influenced by Baltimore groups like Stout and Next Step Up. Baltimore has a lot of groups that are excellent and have their own style that doesn’t copy blatantly from any one scene but these groups also never make it past a certain geographic barrier. When we started Trapped Under Ice in 2007, we all saw eye to eye about playing a certain aspects of hardcore that wasn’t being played at the time that we loved from the 90’s. I didn’t expect anyone to care about this band and we went out on a limb several times where it could have blown up in our face.” An example of this is when they shot the photo to adorn their demo cover which was released in vinyl “We did a shirtless photo of us in front of a wall in 90's style like the bands that influenced us. We expected people would make a joke out of it and not get what we were going for but it turned out other people were looking for a band to fill that niche in hardcore as well.”

Building a name among hardcore hungry people through national tours and two European tours (the band just completed a seven week tour of Europe with Terror and Stick To Your Guns) Trapped Under Ice have readied the release of their first proper full-length “Secrets Of The World” on Reaper Records this summer. Speaking on the writing from their 2008 EP “Stay Cold” to the new album Tripp who helps write the guitar parts outside of his vocal role in the live setting said “It’s definitely a continuation of the previous releases but we really focused on transitions, anything to break a song up, we don't want the listener to expect what's coming next. We put a real effort on new album to write songs that transition into each other during length of album, each song is diverse but flows nicely. We started writing over last nine months, we took the last three or four months before recording off of playing shows which was longest we have taken off to really focus on making everything tight.”

Lyrically while there is no planned theme to the songs, the phrase secrets of the world keep re-appearing in several of the songs unintentionally. Tripp comments “hardcore is music about anger and one thing that makes me angry is not knowing things. Things like why I do the things I do, why the government acts the way it does, I write on this album about how people in my life will never understand why I leave the security of home for months at a time to play music far away or how I don’t know God and how I believe it’s not for humans to know his secrets and why I was born into a situation I have no control over.” Perhaps the biggest influence on the lyrics is again the city of Baltimore whose urban environment and issues channel their way into the band’s viewpoint. When I asked the inevitable question about the parallel of the TV show The Wire and the band’s life Tripp reveals “that show is accurate about the lifestyle of people who are involved in drugs. While I do not take drugs I was born into a situation where people close to me were involved with drugs, where my house got raided and there were dealers in our home. I don’t glorify that lifestyle and I moved out at eighteen but that was a part of my upbringing and influenced who I am today.”

The band is rounded out by Ben (recorded drums), Brendan (live drums), Jared (bass), Brad (guitar) and Sam (guitar). The last unofficial member of the band is Scott Vogel of Terror who has been a major support taking the band under his wing. “Patrick who runs our label is good friends with Scott and when we were supposed to play a show together we didn’t expect anything. Once we played members of Terror were in the pit moshing and singing along and it blew our mind. Scott’s helps us so much that we called him our manager and he has really taken on that role.” Terror and Trapped Under Ice will spend the summer on the 10 For $10 Tour playing with Bane, Madball, Poison The Well, War Of Ages, Crime In Stereo, Vision Of Disorder, This Is Hell, The Mongoloids and more.
