Cage Online In 2007 Interview

HMTV Canada: 1. Hi Sean How are you? San Diego sunny and warm this time of year?

Sean: San Diego is like paradise most of the time but I used to live in Alaska and I am a big time snowboarder so I love it when storms blow through and dump the powder! This season has been big on snow.

HMTV Canada: 2. Any new videos or new material in the works for 2008?

Sean: Well our work level has never been so high as it is now coming off the success of the HELL DESTROYER CD. We have a huge array of clothing and merchandise coming out and yes a DVD is in the works as well. We have been feverishly writing material on the new CD and it has been going killer. It will be very hard to top HELL DESTROYER but we are implementing our new drummer Norm leggio to the fullest. Along with a busy tour schedule there will be a lot of CAGE in 2008. Oh yes we also have 4 new releases on itunes only of some rare and unreleased material which is killer too.

HMTV Canada: 3. Out of all your albums - CD's - Unvieled (1998); Astrology (2000); Darker Than Black (2003) and Hell Destroyer (2007) which one was the most challenging to record and produce?

Sean: HELL DESTROYER for sure it took 3 years to write and 1 year to record. We wanted to make sure the CD ripped and destroyed from start to finish so the writing process was very intense and detailed. The album is really 2 albums long so it is like we did two records almost. Richard Carr spent forever fine tuning it so we had a true analog sound and delivery on this CD. No plug ins were used at all. Everything went to tape and only vintage outboard tube compressors were used. It was a real old's school way of recording which was amazing.

HMTV Canada: 4. How has Cage music evolved or changed since they first formed their band and began playing together in 1990?

Sean: Well of course you always evolve but maintaining your identity throughout is the key. We have really always focused on writing good songs that have hooks, show the technical musicianship and stay true to the vibe of our heavy metal style while not sounding dated. It is a fine line that we have been very adept at balancing. Personally my singing has evolved tremendously as I am always pushing the limits. I could never do what I did on HELL DESTROYER with my skills during UNVEILED or even DARKER THAN BLACK. Now I have been using a new screaming technique that will provide even more power for the new CD we are working on now. We keep getting better with every release and those are the words of myself and the consensus of the fans and critics alike.

HMTV Canada: 5. What are some highlights of your live album Hidden Sessions? What can the fans expect?

Sean: The live album was just a release we took from a recording in Klamazoo Michigan at the classic metal fest. It sounded pretty good so we put it out. We plan on doing a proper live CD in 2009 with the newer material also. The Hidden sessions are tracks we thought the hardcore CAGE fanatics would enjoy checking out.

HMTV Canada: 6. Why were the rare tracks in Hidden Sessions never revealed to the public in previous albums? Sean: Some of them have showed up on compilations like the 2 covers by Savatage and Judas Priest. The other tracks were pre-production versions of songs that were never released and some song ideas we worked on that may have been changed along the way. There are like 5 completely unreleased tracks or more and some shredding stuff that rocks. I love the album cover for that one also. On our new website the track by track liner notes will be there.

HMTV Canada: 7. Who are all the current band members and have they been with Cage since you began playing together back in the 90's?

Sean: The 3 original gangsters are myself Sean Peck, David Conan Garcia the guitar monster, and Mikey G. on bass guitar 15 years now and rising fast! Anthony McGinnis has been in the band 8 years now and plays a mean ass guitar and is an amazing song composer. Norm Leggio ex PSYCHOTIC WALTZ recently joined the band to play drums after our last drummer of ten years quit. He has been a breath of fresh air as now all remnants of any drama have been removed ha! His speed, accuracy, and intelligence will really shine through on our next CD!

HMTV Canada: 8. Is there any cage Albums that has made platinum or gold?

Sean: All of them. Just kidding. That is funny but no. We are in it for the love of metal and how hearing and performing the music makes us feel. That would be nice though. Fortunately I have a very successful real estate company that I own and run so I still live like a rock star! In fact everyone in the band has very successful outside of the band and everyone owns at least one home and a fast sports car. You have to be realistic in this business and our outside lives have allowed us to spare no expense it putting out top quality material for maximum value to the fans. For example our 30 page heavy metal graphic novel that comes with the HELL DESTROYER CD.

HMTV Canada: 9. Does the band prefer live or studio recording?

Sean: Recording in the studio but we are always told we are a much better band live which is the best compliment you can get.

HMTV Canada: 10. Are Cages recordings completed in digital or analog?

Sean: Every CAGE CD has been all analog so far. UNVEILED and ASTROLOGY were done completely without pro-tools at all on 2 inch tape. They were mixed at Paramount studios in Hollywood and mastered at Capital Records. The DARKER THAN BLACK and HELL DESTROYER CD's were done on pro-tools but all tracks went to tape and all outboard compressors were used. Everything then was mixed done to half inch tape for maximum fatness. Our next CD will be all digital I believe to provide a completely different vibe for us. It should be interesting.
